Where To…Hit the Gym in Shinjuku
Hit the Gym in Shinjuku
It's hard to find a gym in Japan like the ones we're used to "back home". Whether it's the sheer size, limited hours, lack of equipment, or the implementation of peculiar rules, going to the gym here can be a far different experience from what many of us may be accustomed to.
Tucked away in the heart of Shinjuku is a large gym that defies two of the most common restrictions at Japanese gyms - outdoor shoes are permitted and it's open 24 hours!
Spanning three floors, the Tokyu Sports Oasis 24+ gym is just behind the APA Hotel and adjacent to the VR Zone in Kabukicho. Recently, we had the privilege of exploring the gym on a cold winter afternoon.
Now, there is no denying that some parts of the gym are aging, but its longevity is exactly why you won't be able to find a gym of this size anywhere else in central Tokyo. Outfitted with top of the line Life Fitness cardio and fitness machines, as well as a large weightlifting area (including a smaller space reserved for women only), the renovated seventh floor is quite the treat for the traditional gym bunnies. Don't forget the outdoor pool area, the 25 meter pool, and warm water pools that will serve the casual swimmer well. Of course, all will appreciate the clean and spacious locker rooms.
If you're looking for a gym in the Shinjuku area, you'll definitely want to read on and learn more about the Tokyu Sports Oasis 24+ gym!
Walk into the lobby and swipe your member's card to get started.
Besides the reception, there's a small cafe-like space for you to catch your breath and gather your thoughts. Both the hot yoga room and Studio Room 1, geared for aerobics and Zumba-type classes, can be found on the fifth floor.
First time? Ask the reception for a one-day pass, or you can register for a one-month membership (at a premium!).
The Aqua Zone
The indoor pool area consists of three pools, including a 4 lane 25 meter pool, a spa pool (hot water), and relaxation pool (warm water). The relaxation pool connects to an outdoor area complete with a deck - perfect for laying out during the warmer months. The outdoor pool remains open throughout the year and allows for swimming outdoors in the dead of winter, albeit in a small space not conducive to lap swims.
Good to Know: Pool
No tattoos, piercings, or jewelry
Swim caps mandatory
Kickboards and pull buoys are available (free)
Paddles (soft and hard) and fins are not permitted, except during classes
4 lane pool - 1 is always reserved for walking
Depending on the time of day, pool classes, e.g. aqua jogging will take 2 lanes
Various aqua and swim classes available in Japanese
Oasis Link is an in-house app that utilizes a wrist-based fitness tracker to record your activity around the gym and electronically log personal statistics, such as blood pressure and weight.
Virtually every machine and facility from the treadmills to the assisted weights, the pool, the studio, and even the scale, will send information to the Oasis Link app. Just tap your fitness tracker on the sensor by each machine before you start and after you finish your activity - super easy!
Whether it's time and distance on an elliptical or the amount of weight and the number of reps on the leg press, the app will receive and record information regarding each activity. New members will receive their own Oasis Link band upon membership registration but if you've forgotten yours, grab one from the basket at reception. Learn more about Oasis Link here (in Japanese).
Oops, I Forgot...If you need spare gym apparel or have forgotten a towel, you can purchase tickets for a wide variety of items in the vending machine by the entrance. Exchange the ticket for the item(s) at the reception.
Items Available for Rent
Towels (hand and bath)
Sneakers (22CM up to 30CM)
Swimsuits (men's and women's)
Workout tops and bottoms (S up to 3L)
The locker rooms comprise most of the 6th floor; there is also a quiet lounge area overlooking the pool and an esthetician room for spa treatments.
Each locker room has showers and a public bath, as well as hair dryers and individual lockers that are locked/opened using your gym card.
Regulars can purchase a smaller personal locker on a monthly basis; lockers are very limited however, and are typically all occupied save for some inconveniently located ones.
Good to Know: Locker Room
No rollies (wheels on backpacks or suitcases)
Only swimsuits should be placed in the wringer
Refrain from using your mobile device(s), including cellphones and tablets
Don't walk around dripping wet - be considerate
Locker rooms are not accessible during after hours - so don't expect to be able to shower after your workout until at least 0830.
Pools are only accessible from the locker rooms - so don't expect to be able to swim until at least 0830.
Hot Yoga Enthusiast? A separate hot yoga membership must be purchased for those interested in hot yoga. Due to limited space, hot yoga classes require reservations in person or by phone.
This is where the gym really shines! Equipped with several Smith machines and the heaviest dumbbells reaching 45KG (100lb), the free weights area will please all but the pickiest of bros and ladies who lift.
If you're into posing (or just sneaking a look at your sexy self), make sure to look up - mirrors are placed strategically on the ceiling! Further down, there's an abundance of gym equipment and weight machines that remove the guesswork and expand your fitness routine.
Studio and Cardio
Studio Classes including Group Power, Group Fight, and Zumba classes are held in Studio 2 adjacent to the free weights area and opposite the cardio zone.
If you love the treadmill, there are thirty (yes, 30!) top of the line Life Fitness 'mills - hard to beat in Tokyo.
Good to Know: Gym
Peak hours are weekdays 8PM to 10PM
Classes from around 0900 to about 2200 every day (all classes are in Japanese)
Inbody 730 is available for all (free)
Special areas are set aside for personal trainer sessions and women-only
Stretching and Functional Fitness
A matted area provides plenty of space for stretching and light calisthenic exercises. A limited selection of exercise bands and styrofoam foam rollers are provided but there are no roller sticks or rumble rollers.
There are a number of Swiss balls scattered around the seventh floor but you won't find kettle bells, medicine balls, Bosu balls, or TRX bands here due to the lack of floor space for such activities.
