Where To…Experience Kendo in Tokyo

Looking to experience a bit of martial arts combined with Japanese culture?
Why not try kendo with trained practitioners and authentic equipment?
For Kenshi Nagamatsu, kendo is not just a passion but a way of life. At 5 years old, Kenshi began his kendo journey. For years, he trained in earnest to develop his understanding of the art and sharpened his skills through countless competitions.
In 2016, he established Samurai Trip to broaden the appeal of kendo and enable all to have an all-encompassing kendo experience of a lifetime.

Don't Be Intimidated!
It matters not whether you've swung around a shinai before, watched kendo on TV, or think kendo is a traditional Japanese soup, Samurai Trip's kendo experience is for everyone!
Don't speak Japanese? Kenshi will guide you through your Samurai Trip in English from start to finish.
During your kendo experience, you'll learn the proper grip, basic footwork, various strikes, and correct form in charges. Starting in the most basic attire, you'll build your skills before you're given the rest of the protective equipment, including the men (head gear).
Once you're decked out in proper kendo attire, you'll finally use your new techniques to participate in a series of sparring sessions!

With Samurai Trip, your kendo experience is more than a lesson on kendo basics.
Besides being shown the correct techniques and learning the proper manners, you'll also be taught how kendo intertwines with Japanese culture and demonstrates values held close to the Japanese.
You won't always be on your feet! Samurai Trip smartly combines moments of physical activity with time to hydrate, sit down and catch your breath. Kenshi engages you deeper into the sport by explaining the history of kendo and analyzing footage of high level kendo competitions.
Of course, the real fun begins once you've donned the full kendo attire called the bogu.

Samurai Trip teaches you about "the way of the sword" in a safe, structured environment.
