About the Event

Located in Daisetsuzan National Park in Japan’s northernmost prefecture, Hokkaido, the Tokachidake Trail Run is a unique opportunity to race the trails of an active volcano! The Tokachidake Trail Run starts in the northwest corner of Kami-Furano (well-known for its lavender fields) at Hinode Park where the spectacular views of the Tokachi mountain range require no Instagram filter.

Fuel up on Saturday night at the pre-race barbeque, then run to your heart’s content at the largest national park in Japan! For the ultimate post-race experience, kick back and relax at one of four hot spring resorts within the park. Come for the race, stay for the weekend (or longer)!

About the 55KM Course
Runners will immediately encounter a steep climb towards an observation deck – even those gunning for the podium will want to take it easy for the long day ahead. Following a path along the side of the observation deck, you’ll continue onto a winding road in a hilly area. Beyond the trees, you’ll see vast farmlands and with every turn, the landscape will change ever-so-slightly allowing glimpses of the Tokachidake mountain range throughout the course.

Along the way, you’ll see a mysterious large, red structure meant to slow down mudflows and prevent landslides from irreversibly damaging the natural environment. Further down, you’ll begin running along a riverside dotted with small plants and pockets of greenery. On a nice day, the waters will dazzle under the rays of warm sunshine and up ahead, you’ll see faint plumes rising lazily above Mt. Tokachi.

Continue running along the embankment and through the stream – depending on the previous days’ weather, this may mean splashing through shallow waters. Upon leaving the river, you’ll encounter paved portions towards the observatory. Soon, you’ll begin to gain elevation as you navigate towards the Tokachidake evacuation shelter, which is also the turn-around point. Don’t forget to admire the panoramic views of the path you’ve already conquered!

Next, you’ll head back to the observatory and towards the Hakuginsou onsen. Soon, you’ll encounter a walk-only segment (no running!). Walk briskly or take your time but do your part in protecting the abundant natural vegetation and take care not to trample the colorful alpine plants nor stray from the trail.

From Hakuginsou, you’ll cut across the Tokachidake mountain range and traverse several rolling hills as you gradually descend to the finish.
