About the Event

Following a series of successful events in the United States, Canada, and Scotland, Grinduro is now expanding to Japan in 2019!

Founding sponsor Giro is accompanied with global sponsors Fabric, Maxxis, and Rapha, as well as host brand Salsa Cycles, to present Grinduro’s one-of-a-kind experience to the Shinetsu Area Trail in the heart of Nagano Prefecture. A unique combination of gravel road race and mountain bike-style enduro, Grinduro has caught the attention of cyclists worldwide with its unique format.

Known for “the perfect party-to-race ratio", you can expect to see festival-like details that make Grinduro a revolutionary cycling experience. With its impressive display of art and music, excellent food, great people, and camping, it’s more than just a one-day cycling event!

Whether your poison is the 40KM or the 80KM, the race remains challenging! But the Grinduro is not a festival of suffering. With a mass start from Madarao Mountain Resort, the day then plays out at a moderate pace. Grinduro links together local roads in a quiet corner of the Shinetsu Area. You’ll be able to pedal with your friends and your heroes, since the race isn’t timed. The course features a mix of surfaces (smooth pavement, gravel, and single track). Only four segments within the course are timed, and they’re all very different. In this way, the Grinduro rewards the most well-rounded of rouleurs.

For those seeking more party than race, there's the Grindurito, a half distance class. 40KM long and with 1,000m of climb, you'll have two timed segments. Keep in mind that the mountains are steep, the gravel, is rough, and the trails are tough!

Grinduro (80KM)
Two loops (one in the AM, one in the PM) on 70% gravel, paved roads, and single track
Finish times aren’t based on overall loop time, but four timed segments (each roughly five to ten minutes)
Overall time does not matter – only the four timed segments
The most well-rounded of cyclists will perform best

Grindurito (40KM)
One loop on in the AM on 70% gravel, paved roads, and single track.
Roughly one half of the Grinduro without the competition.

For reference:
80KM = 50 miles / elevation gain about 2,000m (6,562 ft)
40KM = about 25 miles / elevation gain about 1,000m (3,281 ft)
