SAGAMIHARA GREEN POOL
5 CHOME 1-1-1 YOKOYAMA, CHUO WARD
SAGAMIHARA, KANAGAWA 252-0242
For our readers in the northern part of Kanagawa, the Sagamihara Green Pool nestled by Yokoyama Park is a can’t miss training spot for swimmers and triathletes. Contrary to its name, it is (thankfully) not green but it is a gem of a 50 meter 10 lane public pool. A diving pool and a 25m pool are also available. Professional triathlete sightings are not uncommon but even the most leisurely of swimmers should find a suitable lane. The first lane or two are reserved for walking and swim teams will almost certainly dominate the last couple lanes from late afternoon but it hardly ever becomes a massive wave pool. In addition to the pools, visitors can take advantage (for a nominal fee) of a medium-sized "training room" with weights and cardio machines.
Pros: The water temperature stays between 28 to 29 degrees and each lane rarely has more than 10 swimmers. The Green Pool almost never gets crazy crowded and is welcoming to swimmers of all levels.
Cons: The facility itself is a little outdated and is a solid 10 minute walk from Kamimizo station. The 10 minute breaks every hour seems a tad excessive and one or more pools are frequently closed during the weekends for competitions.
Rules and Regs: Ten minute break every hour (:50 to :00). Not strict about piercings but no visible tattoos. No watches (including Garmins). No water bottles poolside. Swim caps and goggles necessary.
Toys and Suits: Kickboards available (free). Paddles and fins can only be used 1 to 3 times a month during a designated time frame (usually Sunday 0900-1200) as specified in the venue calendar. No wetsuits.
Where: From Hashimoto station, take the JR Sagami Line two stops towards Chigasaki. Alight at Kamimizo station and walk about 10 minutes (650 meters) towards Yokoyama Park. For reference, map available here.
Hours: 0900-2130, except Fridays 0900-2230. Closed PHs and every 2nd, 4th Monday. Check the venue calendar beforehand.
Cost: ¥500 per adult for 2 hours. ¥300 per adult for each additional hour. Prepaid cards available for ¥2,000 (worth ¥2,200) and ¥4,000 (worth ¥4,400).
