Leo: Mixing Fun and Fitness in Tokyo
Samurai Sports would not happen without the men and women who keep fit and challenge themselves! In Snapshots, we ask a few questions to the men and women who excel and explore outside their comfort zones, in Japan and abroad.
How would you introduce yourself?
My name is Leo, born and raised in Vancouver, Canada to Japanese parents. I've lived in Japan almost 3 years, and am loving all this city has to offer. My life here has been defined by the people I've met and the passion projects I have been pursuing. I truly believe that I am exactly where I should be at this time.
How do you pursue an active lifestyle?
Recently, I have been organizing communities around my interests. After all, what better way to enjoy a sport than to share one's passion and bring people together around shared hobbies?
For example, I wanted to try bouldering, so I started inviting friends and now we collectively have one of the largest bouldering communities in Tokyo. Similarly, I was interested in obstacle course races, and now I lead the largest OCR community in Japan. Additionally, I lead one of the largest running clubs in Tokyo.
I still hit the gym, bike, and run alone, but I typically lead community workouts 4 to 5 times a week.
Tell us about a fitness or sports-related item/gear/equipment that you love.
My Apple Watch. It has proven incredibly useful for when I lead workouts as well as for tracking my own workouts. The built-in timer is great for leading HIIT workouts, the music controls allow me to easily adjust the volume and tracks being played on the speakers, and the remote camera is a great "party trick" for group shots. For personal workouts, I love that I can go for a run with only my watch, since I can track my run and pay for the train / buy drinks with the built in SUICA/Apple Pay.
Whether it’s in the studio, on the road, or at the pool, we know you’re working hard to log those training hours - and we want to learn more about you! Give us a holler at email@example.com if you would like to be featured next - or better yet, email us with how you would answer the questions above.
