Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament 2017
TORAY PAN PACIFIC OPEN TENNIS TOURNAMENT 2017
The largest international women’s tennis tournament in Japan, the Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament 2017, is ready for you to join the stands! Now in its 34th year, the tournament will run from Saturday, September 16, to Sunday, September 24, and will take place on the courts of the Ariake Coliseum and the Ariake Tennis Forest Park.
Since the first Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament was held in 1984, it has become a major tournament featuring the toughest matches between the world’s women’s tennis superstars and captivating tennis fans in Japan. Last year, 18-year-old Naomi Osaka was runner-up, her bullet-like serves bringing the whole venue to a fever pitch. She became the first Japanese player to advance to the final round since Kimiko Date’s win in 1995. Fans can expect this year’s tournament to be nine days of riveting drama that will unfold under the intense scrutiny of tennis lovers from Japan and all over the world.
This year, the world's top-seed Angelique Kerber, third-seeded Karolina Pliskova, and Wimbledon semi-finalist Johanna Konta, will compete at the tournament.
This will be Kerber's sixth appearance at the Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament, and the fourth for Pliskova. Kerber reigns as the number one player in the world with her high defensive ability, through which she covers the entire length of the court, returning shots from any stance. In recent years, she has added an aggressive style to her arsenal. Often hailed as the next queen of the court, Pliskova fires serves from her 186-cm frame. Don't miss your chance to watch these elite, top-class athletes and cheer for these powerful women at the Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament 2017!
Naomi Osaka (ranked 59th as of July 3, 2017) just competed in her first Wimbledon, making it to the third round. All eyes are on Osaka as she takes on the tennis world armed with serves over 200kph that have earned her the nickname “Bullet Train.”
Last year, Osaka competed in the 2016 Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament and became the first Japanese player to advance to the final round in 21 years, since Kimiko Date won the tournament in 1995. The next month, Osaka was named the WTA Newcomer of the Year for 2016 for her performance, the first time the award has been given to a Japanese player. Not yet 20, Osaka is already becoming a player that will carry women’s tennis in Japan in the future.
