Photo Essay: Japan Rugby Challenge Match 2017 (Oct 28)
Despite a looming typhoon, thousands gathered at Fukuoka's Level 5 Stadium to watch Japan XV versus World XV this past Saturday, the 28th of October. As one of the venues for the Rugby World Cup 2019, Level 5 Stadium provided both sheltered seating and an electric environment for the rugby faithful - as well as very wet conditions for those on the pitch.
Japan XV were defeated 47-27, but not without putting up a strong fight in the first half with just one point separating the two teams at 14-13. However, the defense began to show structural weaknesses in the second half as the invitation side began to find gaps with tries from Sam Wykes, Adriaan Strauss, Corey Flynn, and Fujita rapidly turning the score to 40-13.
Yet, Japan captain Michael Leitch was optimistic, stating: “There were positive and negative outcomes to the new things we tried in defense and in a good way that has given us things we need to work on ahead of the test against Australia.” (Source: Japan Rugby Football Union)
