Sumo on Tour
Watch a Jungyo Exhibition in West Tokyo
Between the end of the Nagoya basho in July and the September basho in Tokyo, you'll find the sumo rikishi on tour around the country.
Similar to baseball's spring training, the sumo world engages in jungyo (巡業) tours between basho tournaments to raise public awareness of sumo, develop the audience for the sport, and show a lighter side to an otherwise very serious group of professional athletes.
At each jungyo event, you're treated to a series of exhibition matches and informative demonstrations of the ceremonial aspects of sumo.
Unlike any one of the six basho tournaments, it's not all serious at a jungyo event. The rikishi are more relaxed and the audience even have opportunities to interact with them!
We guarantee you'll laugh as you watch the shokkiri, a slapstick sumo performance that transcends language barriers. Be amazed as you watch how they fine-tune their unique hair-styles and witness the grandeur of the yokozuna!
