About the Event

Race the Doshumichi and challenge Gokayama’s mountain ridges! Best suited for intermediate and advanced trail runners, don’t miss the opportunity to run by a World Heritage Site and tackle more than 2,600 meters (36KM) or 1,200 (16KM) meters of cumulative elevation gain! After it’s all said and done, treat yourself to a scrumptious seafood dinner from the nearby Japan Sea!

Start and finish amidst 1200 year old temple steeped in history and run a course that monks once travelled to strengthen their will and self-discipline. The trail will take you through beautiful beech forests and along mountain ridges. The Doshumichi has only recently been cleared and is now maintained by local conservation groups.

Don’t forget to check out the unusual thatched roof at Gyotokuji Temple, as well as Gokayama’s largest gassho-style house at the Iwase family estate. The crafty are encouraged to consult the Nanto Tourism Board for an appointment to experience and learn about the ancient art of Japanese paper (washi) making. Nearby Suganumu is a small riverside village comprising of just nine houses and two museums – both offer ample opportunities to learn about traditional life in Japan.

About the 36KM Long Course
One way course. Starting at Gyoutokuji, run past Gokayama Suganuma Gassho village, a World Heritage Site before climbing approximately 700m to Mt. Ogura. To prevent congestion and in an effort to spread out runners in this area, runners will be routed on a roundabout course different from the previous year. A 500m climb up Takaochibayama will be followed with a 400m climb to ascend Takashimizuyama. From there, rolling hills fill continue until the finish line. Descents will be technical – downhill lovers will be thrilled with the challenges ahead!

About the 18KM Middle Course
Out and back. Starting at Zuisenji, climb a single track for approximately 500 meters. Continue the climb on trails for another 400 meters. Both climbs are aggressively steep – beginners and advanced trail runners will be challenged. Throughout the course, runners will enjoy spectacular views of the woods and rural scenery from various vantage points.
