The 4th Huaraches 6 Hour Endurance Relay Marathon
What: A six-hour relay race in which each team member or individual must run laps around a 2km track course wearing huaraches. Awards will be given to teams and individuals who run the longest distance within the allotted time frame.
When: Sunday, the 10th of September 0800-1600
Where: Furuichiba athletics track field (Kawasaki, Kanagawa prefecture)
Give your running shoes a break and enjoy the liberating feeling of running in huaraches!
Workshops on making your own pair of huaraches and lessons on running effectively in huaraches will be offered (in Japanese) throughout the day. There will be running courses for participants who prefer to wear running shoes or don't feel confident wearing huaraches.
Six hours may sound like a long time but this marathon event is relaxed and welcoming of everyone! When you're not running, Japanese comedian M Takashi (famous for his impersonation of Japan's star marathon runner Yuki Kawauchi and hilarious exercise drills) will have you rolling with laughter. A Mexican lunch will be served and once the race is finished, all are invited to raise a bottle of cerveza (beer) in a toast of accomplishment!
What are huaraches?
Huaraches are a traditional Mexican sandal worn by the world fastest runner tribe, the Tarahumara of Mexico. According to some early ethnographers, the name of this form of minimal footwear translates to "runners on foot" or "those who run fast" in the native Tarahumara language.
